Established in September 2009, the Delta Regional Institute was created as a cooperative agreement with the purpose of developing a collaborative multi-state programmatic framework to address significant health disparities impacting minorities residing within the Delta Region States of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.

Through the utilization of a prevention research center model, the cooperative agreement aims to address the health promotion and disease prevention needs of rural disadvantaged and minority populations by conducting and implementing participatory, science-based, health promotion and disease prevention research and interventions.

Delta Regional Institute Goals

  • Increase awareness of healthcare issues impacting rural disadvantaged and minority communities;
  • Increase access to quality healthcare for rural disadvantaged and minority populations;
  • Increase the number of healthcare personnel available to provide services to rural disadvantaged and minority populations;
  • Increase¬† the number of researchers focused on geographic health disparities; and
  • Improve health outcomes for rural disadvantaged and minority populations.
